These are the top 3 things to consider when making your decision to become a REALTOR:
- REALTORS usually get into the business for 2 reasons; freedom and money. The strange thing is that people get out of the business for the same 2 reasons. Realtors have the freedom to do whatever they want which means they have the freedom to do nothing. The biggest problem in our business is there is no accountability. The only one who can fire you for not working is you. REALTORS fail because they do not do the simple fundamentals it takes to build their business and they run out of money and quit. This is why one of the top 3 things about being a REALTOR is you have to have your own drive and determination. You have to treat it like a business and go to work every day and work hard.
- “Real Estate is a game and the one who makes the most contacts wins”. It is common knowledge amongst veteran REALTORS that if you want to double your business double your contacts. 70% of a REALTORS job has nothing to do with buying and selling houses. 70% is finding the people to buy and sell houses with. It is called “Prospecting”. This is the activity of making contacts and following up regularly with other human beings, building relationships based on trust and when their time of need comes up they choose you to buy or sell the biggest investment that they will likely ever make. It is a huge privilege and responsibility for you.
- What are the personality traits that make a good REALTOR? There are 3. First and foremost an outgoing personality. You cannot be shy and introverted or afraid of people and be a successful REALTOR. You have to be willing to ask tough questions to protect your clients and do a good job. Second, is a strong work ethic. It is true that the pot at the end of the rainbow for a REALTOR is huge. However, the rainbow is a tough climb. In the beginning a REALTOR puts in 95% effort with a 5% return on their efforts. However, after you are established and have a strong client base you put in 5% effort with a 95% return. REALTORS work long hours sometimes making nothing for their efforts. However, over time it is incredibly lucrative and very rewarding. Lastly, is a sense of competition. This is the quality that separates the women from the little girls. This is the quality that creates the top producers. You cannot be a top producing REALTOR with a strong sense of competition. Sometimes it’s being competitive with your fellow REALTORS in the office or your town or just competing with yourself. Competitive people are constantly sharpening their saw to be better.
